"Hack Climate Change"Operation #hackCC

The aim of this operation is to participate in an hackaton during the science event fête de la science à l'ENS de Lyon and when the messenger of the climate train train du Climat stops at Gare de Perrache station in Lyon ; this event is co-lacated with a Science Hack Day in Lyon. The topic covers understanding, teaching,and adapting to climate change. After a quick study of the state of the art in France decision was made to take 36 hours around update and extension of the software SimClimat used in K12 in France also known as Climate-Model on opensources forges. However to keep the path of hackatons and science hack days This event wants to be a place of open interaction and serendipity around climate change question.

All good wills are welcome to contribute to this hackaton and hack the science day. We need hackers, designers, climate scientists, researchers and teachers of all disciplines, people ready to help with logistics, ready to lead meshort meetings, to guide visitors, to test products and share experiences, professors and educators, translators in any language etc...

  1. Provide an updated version of the software SimClimat The software is using deprecated libraries and it needs a cleanup to use upto date links and compile without errors. The goal is to provide bnaries for various perating System to enable general use in education and training.Comments and suggestions (multilingual).

  2. Propose a mobile app version of SimClimat for smartphones and tablets. The target is an app that could be installed on smartphones and tablets

  3. Propose modifications on SimClimat to take into account last IPCC report. The 2014 IPCC report consolidates results from 2007 and introduces new ways of describing scenarios, this evolution could be used to change Simclimat interface.

  4. Propose to extend to the IPCC report SimClimat with new functions that might be inspired by old IPCC functions on non free softwares

  5. Propose Do Ii Yorself (DIY) actions to build personal (or school) weatherstation lowcost and connected to the cloud (We can propose a little background on INTEL Edison and RaspberryPi)


Proposals around the following themes will be discussed to provide white papers or recommendations to be developped later on.

  1. Initiate open exchanges to define needs and uses that could be satisfied through new code or software
  2. Propose modifications on SimClimatto take into account last IPCC report

  3. Set up a strategy to participate in Climate Change Challende on top of SimClimat

before any move to add redundant material it is important tocheck what exists.

Some questions the software may answer

What functions are needed, what resources are necessary to understand, teach and adapt to climate change ? In any learning situation : face to face, initial or vocational training, discussions, at school, in the class, in a club with friends...

What do we ned to extend the software ? to whom do we need to ask ? How to use SimClimat in various situations, in various disciplines ?
